Duane Alt Biography 

​

Duane Alt, an artist who has dedicated his life and interest to putting on canvas

the beauty of nature, was born in a small town in Nebraska in 1935.

From a very young age he felt a compulsive drive to paint. His early formative years

in art schooling were in his teens at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles.

 

Even during his 25-year career in the film industry as an art director and production

designer with Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer, Twentieth Century Fox, Walt Disney Productions,

and his personalaffiliations with motion picture producer/directors Irwin Allen

and Stanley Kramer, painting remained a very personal passion.

 

His lifelong interest in art was kindled when he went to Paris

and became introduced to the French school of 19th century Impressionist artists.

Alt furthered his studies in Germany and Italy; however, it was France,

its villages of the Barbizon, the hills of the Provence, and the Mediterranean

that mostly influenced his work. The dazzling sunshine and light, fields of flowers

and lush vegetation have been the inspiration of his work.

 

 From that time on, Alt adopted a French vision in the tradition

of Claude Monet, Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard,

Vincent van Gogh, Marc Chagall, Paul Signac, and Camille Pissarro.

France has been the central focal point for the Impressionist artists,

and was vitally important to their lives and their art. All have left

memorable images of its charm and vitality, as has Alt endowed the art world

with original interpretations and impressions of Impressionistic art.

 

Through the years, his style of painting has gone through a transition -

as he explains, his palette has become lighter, he has become interested in the vibrations

in the light areas of the painting and the burst of color activity within a dark area.
